This site had a very nice and short explanation that I liked because I finally understood the relationship between trigrams and taegeuk. In short, the three (tri-) lines are either closed (yang) or open (yin). In Chinese, the unity of Yin and Yang is called Tai Chi and in Korean, this unity is called Tae Geuk.
