I didn't understand the terms of use for the Microsoft Clip Art that I downloaded for the taegeuk trigram images. Apparently this site counts as a commercial site even if it is non-profit, so I can't be using the clip art. I am looking for some open source clip art now and will replace the images with open source ones as soon as I have time.

Actually I wiped away my hard drive, but sort of on purpose, and everything is taking too long because I have to reinstall so much software now. I mean, I have to re-install some antiquated version of Adobe Photoshop and then install the upgrade and so on before I can even use the images. That's why I haven't uploaded the tournament photos yet either.

I could have backed up my hard drive differently, but I wanted to do it this way.

I deleted my hard drive and then I reformatted the partition and I thought this would get rid of my thumbs.db virus but it didn't work. I wanted to save only the documents that I needed and then re-install everything new after cleaning those up, but still this thumbs.db virus that I assume I have from a quasi-pirated version of some old software is leaving its thumbprint everywhere.

So now I don't have Photoshop and none of the CD keys or serial numbers from my old versions work. I did a search of my mail for a download receipt and then looked for some sort download information at my Adobe account and I cannot find anything about a purchase of the Adobe download. I know I bought it a couple of years ago and I know I bought it from Adobe, because the first time I bought I tried to get one of these ultra-cheap versions that people re-sell unofficially and of course it was a scam and I just wasted more time and money on it than it could have even saved me. So I ended up buying the oldest version I could find and an update from Adobe and now I can't find the CD key.

I need to replace the taegeuk trigram images and also the image of the punching girl in the logo because I found a new terms of use. The first terms of use that I read at Microsoft said that anyone with a copy of Microsoft Office can use the clip art. Then I found a newer terms of use that said I cannot use the clip art for any published materials and Web sites are pretty much published to the Web obviously.

I can't find my Adobe and I make no money off this site so I really don't like wasting my time with this.

I am trying to hard now to find some "royalty-free stock photos" or "public domain" photos, because I was trying to find out about fair use of the images and the more I find out about it, the less I want to know. It just gets too complicated when you get into legal areas. I thought this site was educational and non-profit, but it's not exactly a personal site so it must be a commercial site so I don't know what I am allowed to use any more. Some of these sites will only let me use photos for myspace-type sites too and that is also pretty much personal and non-commercial, so I don't even know if I can use those ones. I wouldn't mind so much if it were just a matter at looking through a bunch of pictures, that's not such a bad way to spend one's time, but it's not much use to look through the images at all if they can't be used, so I have to read through all of this legalese first.

I was just wondering, if I am the only one posting replies, does that mean I am talking to myself? Maybe a lawyer could help me with this too, it seems to be a matter of defining the terms again. I think I'm talking to myself actually.

This morning I got another letter from the IRS and I noticed I was supposed to answer it within ten days so I took out a folder with all of my tax info. I saw the email address for a company I worked for in 2006 and it wasn't the same email address that I tried to log into my account at Adobe with. So I tried this one and it worked, but still no info about a download of their product. I actually have two accounts at Adobe with two different email addresses and neither one has any download info. I called them up too but just now I thought of something. I just realized that I paid almost $200 for the version of Adobe that I got from MD of PC so that wasn't the one that I got scammed on. I remember now I got scammed on a version I bought for something like $20 not $200 so actually this was the right CD all along. So I looked up my account there and found the CD key from my order in October 2005 and then I was able to install the CD. I thought that this version wasn't supposed to work, but really I don't think that I ever did download a version from Adobe. I think that I applied the upgrade to this product all along. I spent at least $20 plus time for the scam, I spent almost $200 for the working version and I probably spent about $200 for the upgrade, so it cost me at least $420 and just to compare, I see that the latest version of Adobe Photoshop costs $650 and the extended version costs $1000.
So now I have Photoshop again, but now the problem is that the photos that I am finding in the "public domain" are really really bad. No wonder Microsoft is protecting their copyright, they obviously have something worth protecting. I haven't found any photos to replace the ones I have yet.

No, I only spend about $200 on the mdofpc.com version and I never bought an upgrade. I am confusing this with some other software that I upgraded. I think they're legal, I have no idea. Not everyone who has a Web site is legal. The whole area of software copyrights is pretty ambiguous and I don't like to think about it since I wouldn't be able to do anything at all if I didn't work in a sort of gray area. My brother said that it's only big companies that get persecuted for violation of copyright laws anyway. If I had a choice of any vocation in the world, law would be the very last on my list.

I think this definitely counts as talking to myself now.

I swapped out all of the trigram images so now they are all public domain photos. I also changed the taegeuk trigram page so there are now scientific descriptions of the natural elements. There are still a couple of images elsewhere that will have to be replaced with public domain images. I also have to upload the tournament photos and some changes need to be made on the backend too so that changes like this can be implemented more quickly in the future.

I uploaded all of the remaining tournament photos this morning, but I didn't upload the ones that displayed the solar eruptions. It was that red fog that I mentioned before that I first believed to be due to high humidity conditions. Later on I found this picture of the sun taken by the SOHO mission for my Fire and Sun Trigram Element and I was reading that the SOHO satellite had taken pictures of solar eruptions. I looked at its pictures of the solar eruptions and they really did look a lot like some of my photos. Some of the photos (that may have been exposed) had these distinct, bright red and yellow flares on the edges and I think this might have been a reflection of the solar eruption in my camera lens. There must have been an open window. I haven't really thought out the details yet of how I caught the solar eruption on my camera, but they do look just like them. So I am going to try to sell the photos to NASA on eBay for a Buy It Now price of ten million dollars. That is only about 1% of the cost of the SOHO mission whose "costs have been spread between ESA and its member states, and NASA." I wonder if anyone at NASA ever shops on eBay?

Everything is pretty legal now, except for maybe one copyright-protected image that I'm not really linking to. I just had to remove the Microsoft clip art of the punching girl from my logo and replace it with my own. The new logo has a tangram of a kicking girl. You can tell it's a girl because it's hot pink and lime sherbert green, other than that, I'm not sure exactly how you can tell it's a girl. There are only seven shapes in the tangrams and none of them were the right size for pigtails so it's kind of non-gender specific.

I changed a lot of other things as well, but nobody but me can see the changes. I converted all of the files from C# .NET version 1.1 to version 2.0 which makes everything for me much easier to update and there are far fewer files to maintain, et cetera, but there are a couple of quirks that still need to be ironed out. The documentation for version 2.0 isn't really that great, a lot of people seem to still be using the old version and haven't posted as much yet about the new version in the developer forums.
